The Other Almanac is open for submissions.

Closing April 1, 2026

  • We are looking for essays, column ideas, and visual work. We love fiction and poetry, but are probably not going to publish it if you send it.

  • All accepted submissions will receive an honorarium.

$150 for written work and $50 for visual work.

The open call ends on April 1, 2026 at midnight. If accepted you can expect to hear from us within three weeks. We try and respond to every submission, but depending on the volume we receive we may not be able to.

Essay Guidelines:

  • Try to keep your word count between 1000 - 1400.

  • If you want to pitch us an idea for an essay or column before writing the whole thing, be sure to include a link to your other writing and an outline of your essay or a sample of one full column.

  • Please read our past editions before submitting.

  • We are looking for work on ecology, plants, migration, animals, cities, art, architecture, farming, fermenting, war, celebrities, cooking, artificial intelligence, biology, design, climate, water, technology, Incarceration, calendars, the planets, culture, and anything you think could be a good fit.

  • We are looking for creative non-fiction or fresh journalistic essays. We will most likely not take your work if you are writing in the style of a traditional research paper.

    Column Guidelines:

    Columns are recurring monthly (12) or seasonal (4) short works. Our past columns have included herbal tips, birding, fashion tips, astrology, recipes, and phenology. We are always looking for creative ideas to add to our columns.

  • Word count for columns is under 200 per month (12) or 400 per season (4).

  • Columns can be tips, guides, anecdotes, activities, or anything that relates to monthly or seasonal changes throughout the year.

    Image Guidelines:

  • We are looking for images of original art. We are open to all 2d and 3d materials and processes.
